Resources Utilized in the Preparation of This Brief

We recommend the following resources, a number of which were utilized in the preparation of this issue brief, as good sources for further learning on the subject of microcredit and economic opportunities for women.

Brigham Young University Broadcasting

The university’s broadcasting group developed a segment on microcredit issues. This resource provides a good overview of the concepts behind microcredit and the theoretical debates about the success of microcredit.

Global Development Research Center

The Global Development Research Center is a virtual organization that carries out initiatives in education, research and practice. This article provides arguments for why microcredit alone cannot solve the problems of poor women.

Microcredit Summit Campaign

The Microcredit Summit Campaign is a project of the RESULTS Educational Fund, a U.S.-based grassroots advocacy organization committed to ending hunger and poverty. This Web site provides basic information on the goals and practices of microcredit institutions.

openSummit’s Women Talk to the G8

In May 2007 OpenSummit created a blog preceding the G8 Summit to generate input relevant to the agenda planned for the event. The blog was intended to be a platform for women activists, academics and a variety of journals around the world. The following blog entry, written by World Neighbors’ Sundra Flansburg and Natalie Elwell, describes microcredit, its faults and the advantages of savings and credit groups.
