Bringing the World Social Forum Home
No World Social Forum has been scheduled for 2008. Rather, the international council that plans the forum proposed that January of that year be devoted to action in regional and local sites around the globe. Many of the details, like timing, themes, and so on have been left undefined thus far. Become involved! One of the exciting aspects of this forum has been the space it creates for individuals of all kinds to define their own participation. If you were to envision an alternative to the inequality that results from current economic models, how could you creatively present it? What kind of event in your community or state would best communicate your vision?
Examining Globalization and Its Effects
Globalization, in its current form, has been blamed for Photo by Anthony Barnett/OpenDemocracy.net
many of our current ills. But societal changes are rarely
all good or all bad. How does globalization affect your
community? Have the types of jobs available changed, and how has your area responded? Where does the food you buy come from? Communication has been radically transformed, and we can now communicate relatively cheaply and almost instantaneously across the globe. How has this fact affected your work, or the speed at which you “live.” Try imagining a community that is truly democratic, that listens to and involves all residents in good decision making. What decisions and choices can you make at a personal level that are consistent with that vision? For example, would you be willing to spend a little more to buy locally produced fruits and vegetables that support your neighbors? Could you slow down and invest time to really listen to the people you interact with on a daily basis? What is one thing you will do today?
Support the Work of World Neighbors
A donation to WOW! @ World Neighbors supports work to improve the health and lives of poor, rural people throughout the world. A fundamental aspect of our work is partnering with communities and local organizations to improve their ability and awareness of the need to involve women and others in every aspect of community development. Improving women’s literacy and supporting them in activities that work to raise their status in the eyes of others helps improve democratic structures and produces greater community benefits. Your financial support is critical to the sustainability and expansion of this work.
