"A DIFFERENT WORLD IS POSSIBLE ": THE 2007 WORLD SOCIAL FORUM

A WOW! e-Brief

Work of Women program @ World Neighbors

February 2007

IntroductionAfrican woman speaking at WSF

This month’s e-brief looks at the World Social Forum, an annual event that was first organized in 2001 as a protest against the insularity and exaggerated power of decision makers at the World Economic Forum. The seventh World Social Forum just ended in Nairobi, Kenya, the first time that the event was held on the continent of Africa. Amidst wide-ranging critiques and praises, there is agreement that women had a greater role than ever before, and that youth were involved in increased numbers. This WOW! e-brief provides a glimpse into the history of this gathering of thousands, and some of the results of this year’s forum, as well as an interview with World Neighbors staffer Lydia Tapsoba, who participated in the forum.

Have you signed up to host a March WOW! house party? There is still time! Not only are these events an important source of revenue for our work and an interesting chance to introduce others to WOW! and World Neighbors—they are fun! Parties can be receptions or dinners, or, as creative as an art exhibit with a portion of the proceeds to support World Neighbors work. Try out our suggestions, or use your imagination. Party kits are ready. We are only waiting for you to let us know you are on board. The host of the top revenue producing party will receive a luminous “thank you” silk scarf from India, and colorful Indonesian bracelets will be awarded to the hosts of the second highest producer and of the most creative party idea. You can sign up online at www.workofwomen.org, email us or call WOW! coordinator Sundra Flansburg at (405) 418-0484.
